Obinna Nwosu, the African Democratic Congress’s (ADC) representative for the Ikwuano/Umuahia federal district in 2023, has left the party to run for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State.

This was announced by Nwosu in a statement on Wednesday in the state capital of Umuahia.

The chieftain of Abia claimed that he joined the party in order to back the administration and advance national development.

He said: “Today, I officially joined the All Progressives Congress at the ward level. Our country Nigeria is going through a transition phase and to unlock the next chapter which will bring prosperity to the nation, citizens have to make a deliberate effort to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led administration

“I am joining the APC to support the government and contribute to the development of our dear country.

“I want to thank all my supporters from Abia State who have followed me on this journey.

“I hope this epoch event will encourage more young Abians, indeed igbo youths from the southeast to start aligning with national politics.”

President Bola Tinubu’s manner of leadership has drawn criticism from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), which claims that it has brought about several hardships for Nigerians.

This was revealed by NNPP leader and previous Jigawa State governor candidate Malam Aminu Ibrahim Ringim, who hosted thousands of APC and PDP supporters who switched to the party on Wednesday at his Dutse home.

Malam Aminu said that Nigerians did not deserve the current suffering under the APC-led government, given the wealth of resources Nigeria is endowed with, and characterized Tinubu’s administration as autocratic.

He went on to say that despite their opposition status and nearly a year of giving the ruling party the benefit of the doubt, they had produced nothing. As a result, they have finalized plans to oppose the governing party both nationally and locally.

Malam Aminu clarified that the meeting’s objective was to confer with the NNPP leadership in each of Jigawa State’s 27 local governments in order to brainstorm and develop strategies for rescuing Nigerians from impoverishment.

He went on to say that the NNPP, being an opposition party, would not stand by and watch this happen.

According to his words: “We must challenge the ruling party to do what is right, as Nigerians are entitled to survive without untold hardship.”

In order to preserve the future of Nigeria, Malam Aminu urged citizens to keep away from making the same mistake twice and “collect and vote” in the upcoming general elections.

Concerned about the police’s ongoing blockade of the All Progressive Congress, or APC, secretariat in Benue State and the party’s complete ban on activities due to the commands of Governor Hyacinth Alia—a party leader and attorney—issued an order that Vershima Akaangee has filed a fundamental human rights suit to revoke.

In lawsuit MHC/845M/2024, Akaangee is also contesting the validity of Governor Alia’s order prohibiting political activity.

The Governor of Benue State, the Attorney General, the Commissioner for Justice and Public Order of Benue State, the Commissioner of Police of Benue State Command, and Governor Alia have all joined the lawsuit as first, second, third, and fourth respondents, respectively.

Barrister Akaangee allegedly objected to the third respondent’s letter, which imposed a prohibition on political gatherings, the second respondent’s usage of the APC state headquarters, and the state actors’ inaction.

He went on to say that notwithstanding the explicit provision of Section 40 of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Constitution, he was seeking the enforcement of his fundamental human rights to peaceful assembly and association, which the respondents and their agents had violated and were continuing to violate.

The applicant further claimed that it is a complete violation of fundamental rights for the first to fourth respondents to have continuously barricaded the APC state secretariat, located at 75 J.S. Tarka Way, Makurdi, Benue State, preventing registered members, including the applicant, from accessing and/or engaging in political activities.

In the lawsuit, the applicant asked the court to issue an order compelling the respondents to immediately take down the barricade, leave the property, and close the route that leads to the Benue APC State Secretariat.

In an effort to impede the activities of the APC in Benue State and elsewhere, he also requested a court order prohibiting the first through fourth respondents—either directly or through their servants, agents, or representatives—from interfering with the applicant’s right to peaceful assembly and association.

He also requested an order against the respondents for violating his fundamental human rights, awarding N5 billion in damages.

In the interest of justice, he requested the court hold and grant this motion, contending that the third respondent cannot force registered members of the APC in Benue State to leave a national political party in favor of a group that has produced no results.

The case hearing has been scheduled for May 23, 2024.

Remember that in March 2024, Governor Alia gave the order to security agencies to lock down the APC state secretariat in Makurdi, citing an increase in insecurity. However, investigations have shown that the order was a result of the ongoing power struggle between the governor and Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, which has caused the party to split into two factions. While the other faction, led by Benjamin Omakolo, is in favor of Alia, the Austin Agada-led faction is supported by Akume.
